He didn't move for almost an hour. The ducks came out one by one, as if they'd all agreed the day couldn't start without him.

The trilliums opened overnight. Buttons walked ahead of me the whole loop, stopping at each patch as if introducing them.

Small, spotted, careful. She watched me for a long minute and then followed her mother into the ferns.

Everything silver. The whole sanctuary held its breath until the sun climbed the ridge and let it go.
